8 Lies You've Been Told About Building Your Career

Have you been lied to about your career?

When I first started out, I believed the classic career advice:
Do great work, and success will follow. Sounds nice, right?

Wrong!
In these #nudenotes, I'm sharing some insights on change that for the better. S
hout out to @thetobioluwole whose LinkedIn post inspired this spread of notes.

Whilst I may not agree with everything on this list, it was interesting to hear a difference perspective on career building.

We've all been there...
Worked hard, stayed loyal, and waited for the raise, the promotion, the recognition… and guess what?
It didn’t come.
The truth is, your work doesn’t speak for itself - you have to speak for it.
Promotions don’t just land in your lap, loyalty won’t guarantee a bigger pay check, and quitting isn’t failure - it’s strategy.

I learnt this (the hard... and slow way) that the boldest moves often lead to the biggest breakthroughs, even the unplanned ones!

The world tells you that stability is safe, that you need to tick every box before going after what you want, that asking for more makes you difficult.

The reality is...
Security isn’t in a 9-to-5, it’s in your ability to adapt. Job descriptions are wish lists.
And companies expect you to negotiate.

Don’t wait for permission to build the career you want.

What’s the worst career advice you’ve ever been given?
Drop it in the comments, we’ve all heard some wild ones.
